Officer’s Killer Sentenced to Death

A white judge has sentenced a black liberation war veteran to death for killing a black police officer in a ruling that many feared would heighten tensions.
Tinashe Chakwenya, 25, was killed in April on a white-owned farm in Marondera, about 75 miles east of Harare, that the defendant and others had occupied violently as part of a campaign of farm seizures.
High Court Judge George Smith passed the sentence Friday against Givemore Muoni Katsande, 41. It will automatically be appealed.
