Moorpark Places Second in Region

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Moorpark College hoped to challenge for the Southern California regional track and field championship, but couldn’t overcome Mt. San Antonio and settled for second place Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

The Raiders finished with 88 points, 47 behind the Mounties.

Moorpark finished sixth in the men’s division with 45.5 points. Mt. San Antonio won the title with 119.5 points.

Even with a peak performance, Moorpark assistant Bob MacKay said it would have been difficult for the Raider women to take the title.

“With the Earth and the stars and everything aligned right, maybe we could have won it,” MacKay said. “But Mt. SAC is an excellent team.

“They’re just really deep. We didn’t really do anything wrong on our part.”

Shelaine Larson, a freshman from Buena High, won the discus throw with a toss of 158-6 and finished second in the shotput (43-4) and hammer throw (150-10) for Moorpark.

“I had a [career best] today in the discus and I was really happy with that,” she said. “But I was pretty disappointed with my shotput because I thought I had a good week of practice.”

After winning the 10,000 final last week, Jody Hay of Moorpark came back to finish third in the 3,000 in 10:35.67 and fourth in the 5,000 in 18:17.96.

Ebony Haggans finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

In the men’s competition, Lucais MacKay won the discus (184-3), shot put (54-8) and hammer throw (198-8).

“I would’ve liked the hammer to be a little better, but I felt I competed well,” MacKay said. “On certain days, that’s what it takes.”

Glendale didn’t finish among the team leaders, although the Vaqueros received outstanding outings from their distance runners.

Kim Lorimer, a sophomore from Burbank who has signed with Adams State of Colorado, won the 5,000 in 17:51.39 and the 3,000 in 10:20.61.

“I was more surprised with what I did in the 5,000,” she said. “In the 3,000, I knew I had a good chance to win.”

Glendale’s Jorge Lopez finished second in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:19.0 and Alejandro Lemus placed third in the 5,000 meters in 15:09.95.
