Israelis, Palestinians to Hold Security Talks

Israel and the Palestinians agreed to attend U.S.-mediated security talks today in a sign that a new U.S. effort to end eight months of violence was making progress.
Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat agreed to send representatives to the U.S.-hosted meetings after a second round of talks with new U.S. Middle East envoy William Burns. Burns later met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
An Israeli official said today’s meeting would be the first of two, with the second taking place Wednesday. It was not clear how in-depth the talks would be or what topics would be covered.
