Bay Area Home Sales Decline in September

San Francisco-area home sales fell about 26% in September from a year earlier, the 13th month that sales declined from year-earlier levels, according to DataQuick Information Systems.
About 7,200 new and existing homes were sold last month in the nine-county region that makes up the San Francisco Bay Area, down 22% from August. Sales are down from about 9,800 a year ago, according to the report by the research firm.
The terrorist attacks of Sept.11 have yet to affect the numbers, because most of last month’s sales were in escrow before that date, said John Karevoll, a DataQuick analyst.
Though sales are down, housing prices continue to rise throughout the state. The median price in September was $237,000, up 0.9% from August and an increase of more than 11% from a year ago, according to DataQuick.
