Stayner’s Attorney Questions FBI Tactics
The defense attorney for accused Yosemite killer Cary Stayner questioned Wednesday whether Stayner knew he wasn’t under arrest during the hours he was interrogated by the FBI in Sacramento, and whether coercive tactics were used to elicit a confession.
The effort was part of a hearing on a defense motion to suppress Stayner’s confession to the FBI that he murdered three park sightseers in 1999.
The confession already has been released to the public, but Stayner’s lawyer is challenging the conduct of the FBI and FBI Agent Jeffrey Rinek toward Stayner in the hours leading to the 1999 confession. The hearing will continue next week.
