Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee began a tour of the riot-racked western state of Gujarat today, hours after fresh religious violence erupted.
Vajpayee inspected the ruins of a train in Godhra whose torching by a Muslim mob Feb. 27 triggered sectarian rioting. Fifty-eight people were burned alive in the train, which was carrying Hindu nationalists.
Vajpayee’s arrival came after 10 people died Wednesday in Gujarat, including a family of five Muslims who were burned to death by a Hindu mob on the outskirts of Ahmadabad, the commercial capital.
