A 31-year-old man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he walked into a Los Angeles Times parking garage claiming to have a bomb.
Frederick Bernard Cheaves, a transient from Florida, is charged with making a criminal threat and making a false bomb threat. He is also being held on an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession. His next hearing is Aug. 12.
Cheaves was arrested at 9:45 p.m. Monday after entering the Times building on 2nd Street and telling a guard he had a trigger device tucked in his book bag, police said. Employees were evacuated and two blocks were sealed off. Cheaves’ bag contained only papers, police said.
