From Times Wire Reports
Typhoon Rusa hit a chain of small islands in southwestern Japan, flattening six homes and causing blackouts and evacuations, the Meteorological Agency said.
A power outage had plunged 20,000 households in the Amami Islands into darkness, and most flights were canceled, said public TV broadcaster NHK.
At least 38 people had been evacuated.
With sustained winds of 78 mph, Rusa--the Malayan word for deer--was expected to bring up to 20 inches of rain to parts of the southernmost main island of Kyushu by this morning.
