D.A.’s Office Needs to Reexamine Procedures

Re “Man Jailed 2 Years Sees Case Voided,” Jan. 12:
I could not help but feel sorry for George Lopez, the young man who was wrongly jailed for armed robbery. I was disturbed, however, to read that Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas didn’t seem to think that similar cases in which the system broke down should be examined so this doesn’t happen again.
What is the harm in studying your procedures to see if you can prevent this kind of heartbreak? Even if it’s your election opponent who suggests such a review, if it’s a good idea, why not adopt it?
We trust our law enforcement officials to protect the innocent, not prosecute them.
If they made a mistake, why not just apologize and work hard not to let it happen again? There’s no weakness in that, Mr. Rackauckas--it’s just the right thing to do.
