Wary of Warnings

It was a shame about those kids in the Blue Light Mine, but I am surprised at your dreamy optimism that warning signs will deter such stupid stunts (“Unmarked Mine Menace,” editorial, June 28). On the contrary, danger notices will likely do more to encourage that type of personality. Nothing so entices as to be told you can’t do something or go somewhere.
Yes, youth will be adventuresome, but there is a fine line between adventure and stupidity. Witness all those folks building in the fire zones and flood plains or the idiots who continue to run train-crossing gates. It’s hard to legislate common sense, and, tragically, there will always be those who will never listen or learn.
