D.A. Won’t File Charges in Clash at Student Rally

The district attorney will not file hate crime charges against three San Francisco State students involved in a clash in which racial taunts were used during a pro-Israel rally in May.
Dist. Atty. Terrence Hallinan said that although offensive words were exchanged, he found no evidence that laws had been broken.
After the incident, the university put the General Union of Palestinian Students on probation for one year for violating “procedures and guidelines for rallies/demonstrations,” revoking its funding and its university Web site for that time.
The university also issued a letter of warning to the university’s Jewish student group Hillel, citing its inability to control rally participants.
