Alleged Chechen Rebels to Be Handed Over

Georgian officials said they had agreed to hand over to Russian authorities 13 Chechens detained last month. The news came as Georgian border guards said they had arrested four gunmen trying to cross from Georgia into Russia.
Prosecutor General Nugzar Gabrichidze said Georgia would heed Russia’s repeated requests to extradite the 13 suspected rebels, who were detained in early August.
Russia has long been demanding that Georgia turn over the 13 and do more to halt rebel activity in the Pankisi Gorge area. Moscow claims the gorge is a base and supply line for rebels in the breakaway Russian region of Chechnya.
