Warm Water Suspected in 8,000 Salmon Deaths

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

At least 8,000 adult salmon have died in the lower Klamath River as of Wednesday and the numbers are expected to rise over 10,000, said the California Department of Fish and Game.

The die-off began last week and is believed to be Northern California’s largest in recent years.

Wildlife officials suspect that increased Klamath water temperatures have made the fish vulnerable to “gill rot,” a disease that prevents salmon from breathing.
