Officers fatally shot a 28-year-old man Thursday who reached for an officer’s gun and tried to stab him during a struggle, police said.
Officer Alan N. dela Pena said the shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the 5500 block of Mesagrove Avenue.
Officers were investigating a report of someone pounding on a door in the neighborhood when they found the man behind his house, dela Pena said.
He fought when officers tried to arrest him, dela Pena said. The struggle moved into a home, where the man reached for a gun and the officer’s partner shot him, police said.
The man was taken to County-USC Hospital where he died at 4:45 a.m., police said.
