Official Resigns Over Remarks on Germans

The Italian government official who aggravated a diplomatic spat by calling Germans “hyper-nationalist” arrogant blonds resigned at the request of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Stefano Stefani, an Industry Ministry undersecretary responsible for tourism, expressed regret for his remarks, spokesman Giuseppe Pinetti said.
Stefani’s original comments, which followed a diplomatic gaffe by Berlusconi, prompted German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to cancel his vacation to central Italy.
