South African investigators said they had begun an inquiry into Deputy President Jacob Zuma’s financial interests, but an aide accused political rivals in the ruling African National Congress of a smear campaign.
The inquiry by the elite Scorpions unit is part of a wider investigation into allegations of corruption in a multibillion-dollar arms deal.
Zuma aides linked the inquiry to a power struggle ahead of 2004 presidential elections.
