Safeway Inc., Williams-Sonoma Inc. and three other food retailers were sued in San Francisco by an environmental group for failing to warn consumers about lead in balsamic vinegars they sell.
The Environmental Law Foundation, which describes itself as a nonprofit group founded in 1991, claims the retailers violate California’s Prop. 65, which requires warnings about chemicals that can cause cancer and birth defects. The suit seeks to force the companies to post warnings or pay a fine.
