Business Park OKd; 1,400 Oaks to Be Cut

The Santa Clarita City Council has unanimously approved plans for a business park that will provide up to 7,000 jobs but require the removal of 1,400 oak trees.
The developer of the Needham Ranch project initially had planned to remove 1,700 trees, but that number was reduced after a request from the council and protests by supporters of tree sitter John Quigley, who was evicted from an oak in January after living in it for 71 days.
The 508-acre business park project, approved by the council Tuesday, calls for the planting of thousands of oaks and preserving 270 acres of open space, officials said.
