New job: Parminder Nagra, star of the film “Bend It Like Beckham,” will join the cast of NBC’s “ER” next season, playing an Indian medical student.
Music post: Alan Gilbert, a 36-year-old New Yorker who is chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, has been hired as the first music director of the Santa Fe Opera.
MTV at USC: MTV is producing its next edition of “Sorority Life” at USC’s Zeta Sigma Phi, while a new “Fraternity Life” is under way at UC Santa Cruz. Both are scheduled to premiere in September.
Crooning: Adult standards station KSUR-AM (1260) has licensed an Al Hirschfeld drawing, “The Crooner,” for its logo. The caricature of a man singing into a microphone was commissioned in 1993 by a radio station in New York City.
