Homeownership rises among blacks

Homeownership rates for blacks have climbed over the last 12 years, aided by rising incomes in a booming housing market, but they still trail the general national rate, according to recently released Census Bureau data.
More than 48% of blacks owned their homes in 2002, up from 42% in 1990. However, black homeownership fell short of the national rate of 68%. The Census Bureau report, culled from a March 2002 survey, covered myriad statistics on the nation’s black population.
