‘Bridges’ house damaged by fire

The 1800s-era Iowa farmhouse featured in the film “The Bridges of Madison County” was damaged Monday by a fire that officials consider suspicious.
The fire burned for just over an hour and did extensive damage to the northwest corner of the structure, authorities said.
The two-story house sits in the countryside 10 miles northwest of Winterset, Iowa. It is known as Francesca’s house because it was used in the 1995 film as the home of lead character Francesca Johnson, portrayed by Meryl Streep.
The film was based on Robert Waller’s 1992 best-selling novel that featured central Iowa’s covered bridges as the focal point for a romantic relationship. One of the covered bridges featured in the novel and film was destroyed in 2002. Another was damaged last month.
