American choreographer William Forsythe, widely considered to be one of the most influential and daring choreographers since George Balanchine, has gotten the green light to start a new company based in Dresden and Frankfurt, Germany, as of 2005.
The announcement resolves months of international controversy following Forysthe’s declaration in August 2002 that he would step down after 20 years as artistic director of the Frankfurt Ballet because of the Frankfurt city government’s reluctance to continue supporting the troupe.
Under Forsythe’s leadership, Frankfurt Ballet had become one of the most innovative and important ballet companies in the world.
