Bank to Lend Mexico $1.2 Billion a Year

The World Bank said it planned to lend Mexico $1.2 billion annually through 2008 as part of a sweeping “new strategy” to combat problems ranging from poverty to environmental destruction.
The World Bank said the agreement, jointly designed with President Vicente Fox, would focus on improving education and government institutions -- two areas often cited as hindering Mexico’s growth. But Wall Street economists said the program was a drop in the bucket for Mexico’s $600-billion economy.
