First Horse in O.C. With W. Nile Virus Is Reported

A horse in Yorba Linda has contracted West Nile virus -- the first such case in Orange County, health officials said Thursday.
The horse’s condition is unknown and officials weren’t sure if it was vaccinated for the disease, said Howard Sutter of the county’s Health Care Agency.
As of Aug. 6, 62 cases of equine infection had been reported statewide, Sutter said. Of those, 33 horses died or were euthanized. Symptoms include poor movement, weakness, muscle twitching and inability to stand, Sutter said.
