Deep Rumbles May Help Predict Earthquakes

Low-pitched rumbles from deep under California’s San Andreas fault may offer a way to predict earthquakes, U.S. geologists said Thursday.
They said they were recording continual tremors from much deeper than most quakes. Some began just before a relatively large quake in September, they report in this week’s issue of the journal Science. The vibrations come from a depth of 12 to 25 miles, near the boundary between the Earth’s crust and the hot mantle. Most quakes start at a depth of 9 miles.
