Writer out of touch with world events

It’s a pity that world travel has not made Susan Spano more aware or empathetic [“2003: Despite World’s Cares, the Road Still Beckoned,” Dec. 28]. She flutters from place to place in a frenzy. She gathers new places to visit like so many trophies, the more elegant and extravagant the better.
And when some Europeans express doubt about U.S. policies, aggressive wars and violations of international law, she wraps herself in the flag. One would expect a world traveler to have some understanding of world events. She may support her president, but her comment indicates a total lack of awareness of the global impact of current U.S. policies.
She looks more and more like the typical ugly American.
