Humane Society Fights Rabies in Sri Lanka

Re “Orphaned Sri Lanka Dogs Seen as Danger,” Jan. 16: Humane Society International is already working with Sri Lankan government officials to help vaccinate dogs against rabies. We are funding a rabies vaccination program and concentrating our efforts on refugee camps where there is the most interaction between people and animals and where the most serious threat of a rabies outbreak exists.
At a meeting Jan. 18 in Colombo, the minister of health confirmed that no eradication program had commenced and that he was supportive of the rabies vaccination and sterilization program. We realize that the Sri Lankan government is concerned for the welfare of its people and animals, and our team and several other animal organizations are working feverishly to prevent an outbreak of rabies.
