Electricity Conservation in Hot Weather Urged

The agency that oversees California’s electric grid is urging people to conserve energy today, as a heat wave pushes demand for electricity to record-breaking levels.
The state’s Folsom-based Independent System Operator expects to be able to meet demand today, but is asking Californians to save energy this afternoon to avoid severe conditions if a major power plant or transmission line unexpectedly goes out of service.
The California Independent System Operator said Sunday’s peak was the first time that demand for electricity was above 40,000 megawatts for seven days in a row.
