Climbing chronicle takes top honors

A film chronicling Philippe Magnin and Patrick Berhault’s quest to climb all 82 summits in the Alps higher than 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet) took top prize at the Banff Mountain Film Festival earlier this month. Berhault, a noted French free climber, fell to his death on the pair’s 65th summit attempt, on Dom, Switzerland’s highest peak.
“Sur le fil des 4000,” directed by Gilles Chappez, “is a beautifully done film,” says Banff jury member and adventure moviemaker Michael Brown. More than 300 films were entered at the 30th Banff film festival from Oct. 27 to Nov. 4.
At the companion book festival, the top prize went to “Being Caribou: Five Months on Foot With the Endangered Porcupine Caribou Herd” by Karsten Heuer.
