Republican state Sen. John Campbell of Irvine emerged with 45.5% of the vote in last week’s special election to succeed Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) in the 48th Congressional District, according to final results posted Monday.
Campbell, who received 41,420 votes, will join the top vote-getters from four other parties in a Dec. 6 showdown. The five finalists will include American Independent Party candidate Jim Gilchrist, who came in third behind former Republican Assemblywoman Marilyn C. Brewer.
Among voters casting ballots on election day, however, Gilchrist came in second, behind Campbell. He ended up with 13,423, nearly 15%. Brewer got 17%, with 15,595 votes.
