Outspoken Mayor to Run for Senate in 2006

Stephen Laffey, the outspoken mayor of Cranston, announced plans to challenge a fellow Republican, Sen. Lincoln Chafee, in the 2006 Senate race.
Two Democrats, Secretary of State Matt Brown and former Atty. Gen. Sheldon Whitehouse, are also running.
Laffey said he wanted to give the smallest state in the union “the strongest voice in Washington” and promised to fight big drug companies, big oil companies and special interests.
