Imax Corp., the Canadian maker of big screen movie systems, that has been examining a sale since March, said Wednesday that it had received an “informal inquiry” from the Securities and Exchange Commission about revenue accounting.

The investigation concerns the timing of how revenue for new theater systems was allocated, Toronto-based Imax said. The company said it was cooperating with the inquiry.
