Support for democracy in Taiwan praised

Re “Evolution in Taiwan,” editorial, Feb. 28
It is an encouraging sign that The Times expressed its embrace of democracy in Taiwan. The Taiwanese want to decide their own destiny, not be unified with China. Taiwan is not part of China. Taiwan has been separated from China since 1895 except for three years after 1949. The status quo is one Taiwan, one China, separate, period.

I applaud your editorial on Taiwan. You have expressed what is in the heart of every Taiwanese. A compelling influence from the global community is essential to stop China from deploying 800 missiles aimed at Taiwan. This will ensure not only Taiwan’s security but will also preserve the peace and harmony in the Pacific region.
