17 coal miners killed in blast

Seventeen miners were killed and dozens missing after a blast tore through a coal mine in northern China, state media reported today, adding to the country’s grim string of mining calamities.
The gas explosion hit the Jiaojiazhai mine in coal-rich Shanxi province, the official New China News Agency reported.
Rescuers found 17 bodies and said 30 miners were trapped in the shaft, their fate unclear, news reports said.
