Brooke Smith had 26 points and nine rebounds to help No. 4 Stanford open its season with a 88-61 victory over visiting Loyola Marymount on Thursday night in the first round of the preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The Lions trailed, 36-34, at halftime as both teams shot above 40%.
No. 11 Purdue 67, Belmont 43 -- Katie Gearlds scored 24 points and Sharon Versyp won her Boilermakers coaching debut at home.

No. 21 Texas 103, Alcorn State 44 -- Kevin Durant scored 20 points for the Longhorns in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns trailed, 9-1, before outscoring Alcorn State, 47-9, over the rest of the first half.

Maryland men’s Coach Gary Williams has agreed in principle to a two-year contract extension that will run through the 2010-11 season, the school said.... Guard Denis Clemente and forward Raymond Hicks have been suspended for Miami’s game Saturday against Florida International because of unspecified team rules violations.
