A ‘sorry night’ for Long Beach chums

Oct. 20, 1905: A group of Long Beach bachelors marking a friend’s impending marriage had mechanical troubles on the drive home, The Times reported under the headline, “Long Beach Bachelors Have a Sorry Night.”
The “party of chums” had gone with their friend to “a swell Los Angeles restaurant to celebrate his farewell to single cussedness,” the newspaper said.
“Festivities were continued until the last [trolley] car was missed, and then the party decided to make the trip home in an auto. Five miles out ... something went wrong and the bachelors found themselves stalled.
“The chauffeur could not repair the machine and the coterie stood around with the chill night air penetrating to their marrow.”
The men waited until dawn for the first trolley to come by, “disgruntled with things in general.”
