Gov. Pumps Millions Into Reelection

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has put $3.5 million of his own money into his reelection campaign, according to secretary of state filings late Thursday.
The Republican governor now has donated close to $30 million from his personal fortune to finance his various political campaigns over the last three years.
Sources close to the governor said aides asked for roughly $6 million to complete his 2006 reelection effort, but the governor has settled for the smaller amount so far.
Under Proposition 34, donors are limited to giving $22,300, but candidates can spend as much as they want on their own campaigns.
Schwarzenegger raises far more money from individual donors than Democratic state Treasurer Phil Angelides, but the governor is a big spender on TV ads, voter outreach, travel and perks. At the end of the last reporting period, he had less money than Angelides in his accounts -- $2.4 million compared with $2.8 million.
