DreamWorks makes 3-D film push

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said Tuesday it would produce all its films using three-dimensional technology to appeal to audiences.
Jim Mainard and Jason Clark will lead a new 3-D production team, Glendale-based DreamWorks said. Its first 3-D feature, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” is scheduled for release in 2009.
Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg is betting that interest in 3-D films will help the company establish a franchise beyond “Shrek.” DreamWorks wrote down “Flushed Away,” its latest animated film, by $109 million after the British comedy flopped. It also ended its partnership with the film’s co-producer, Aardman Animations.
Phil McNally, who worked on Walt Disney Co.’s “Chicken Little” and “Meet the Robinsons,” will help supervise production of “Monsters,” a working title.
The studio will produce two versions of new films, including one for use in theaters that are not equipped to show 3-D movies as well as home video and television releases.
Shares of DreamWorks rose 36 cents to $28.39.
