Comparing PR strategies at two firms

Your comparison of the PR strategies of Countrywide and Mattel shows a complete lack of understanding of each company’s problems (“Tactics differ for 2 firms in crises,” Aug. 18).
Mattel’s recall problems relate to its own poor business practices and its relationship with irresponsible Chinese toy makers. Mattel created its own mess and the public should hold its CEO accountable.
Countrywide’s problems stem from a lack of liquidity in securities markets. None of this mess was created by Countrywide. But as an industry leader, it gets the brunt of media abuse, led by the L.A. Times.
