Woman is shot dead in front of her children

A 31-year-old woman was shot to death Sunday afternoon in front of her two children while she was driving her sport utility vehicle in South Los Angeles, authorities said.
Police said the victim, Sharon Carter of Los Angeles, was shot in the back of the head, apparently by another occupant in the vehicle. It occurred about 5 p.m. in the 9600 block of Compton Avenue.
Authorities said the SUV stopped after crashing into two parked cars, and the assailant fled.
Police said they were searching for the victim’s estranged boyfriend as the suspected assailant. He was identified as Stephen Picart of Los Angeles, described as a black man in his 30s.
Authorities said the assailant drove away from the scene in a 2002 Nissan Altima with the license plate 5VFN831. Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to call police.
Carter’s children, ages 4 and 14, were passengers in the SUV when the shooting occurred, police said.
