Consider moving

Re “Grand theft auto times 3,” Column One, March 31

If Times staff writer David Zahniser must park his vehicle on the street, perhaps he should buy a steering wheel lock. It would be well worth the investment. What is the old saying, an ounce of prevention

Zahniser admits that living in Echo Park is a decision involving “a series of calculated risks.” Having taught in the South Bronx and having lived nearby, I know the shock when you tell random middle-class suburbanites where you live -- it’s like some ridiculous badge of honor. I learned after a year of living on a crime-infested street that I’d be much happier paying a bit more in rent and feeling somewhat safe in my new digs.

Perhaps Zahniser might want to continue living in this “uber-hip destination.” Or, he might decide to do as I did, and get out of Dodge.
