A popular beach on Long Island was evacuated at the height of a holiday weekend after stray unexploded fireworks washed ashore the day after a Fourth of July show. About 2,000 visitors were told to leave Jones Beach immediately after the seaborne shells -- some of which measured 8 inches across -- began turning up, state park officials said.
The shells apparently came from a display launched from an offshore barge. The park is expected to reopen today.
