Chinese state news media say 83 people have been formally arrested over last month’s deadly rioting in the western region of Xinjiang and will face charges, including murder and arson.
The arrests announced by the New China News Agency are the first step in prosecuting those implicated in attacks by Muslim Uighurs against members of China’s dominant Han ethnic group. The July riots were the worst ethnic violence in China in decades.
Police have said hundreds were detained after the rioting, in which the government says 197 people were killed and more than 1,700 injured.
