They’re making some campers happy

Professional athletes may want to stop running their own skills camps if they’re going to keep getting outmatched.

One week after Xavier’s Jordan Crawford dunked on LeBron James at his camp in Ohio, Huntsville (Ala.) High quarterback Will Nunn defeated the San Diego Chargers’ Philip Rivers in a skills competition in Huntsville.

If Rivers deserves any credit, however, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Chase argues it’s because he didn’t follow James’ lead.

Wrote Chase: “The only difference is, Rivers didn’t send one of his lackeys to grab the tape of said incident to make sure it never saw the light of day. (Or he did and the lackey wasn’t quick, or intimidating, enough to accomplish said task.)”

Cutting ties

It appeared San Antonio Spurs forward Richard Jefferson treated his wedding plans as a game-time decision.

He didn’t tell his guests he broke off the posh Manhattan wedding with fiancee and onetime New Jersey Nets dancer Kesha Ni’Cole Nichols until two hours beforehand, the New York Post reported.

Jefferson, a former New Jersey Nets player, still treated his friends to a good time, despite bailing on his $2-million wedding at the Mandarin Oriental in Columbus Circle.

“He gave his best friend the Black Amex [credit card] for the night,” a friend told the Post.

Protecting the kids?

The school board at Walkersville High in Frederick, Md. fired its softball coach, Brad Young, for hosting a cookout that included parents drinking alcohol.

School board members told the Frederick News Post that violated school rules, but parent Bob McNally told the newspaper they ignored one important detail.

“None of the students had access to alcohol or were drinking,” McNally told the News Post. “The girls simply had a lot of fun. And Brad did not drink. In no way shape or form did any parents or school employee put any of the students in jeopardy or do anything illegal or immoral.”

A tongue-in-cheek Dan Steinberg wrote in the Sporting News, “You think it’s not immoral to consume Bud Light at a cookout when teenagers are within 300 meters? You know what comes after that, right? Cocaine use. Meth addiction. Gangs of drugged-out softball players doing the Peanut Butter Jelly cheer on the street at 2 in the morning.”
