Using an endoscope to remove leg veins for heart bypass surgery appears to make patients 52% more likely to die within three years, doctors reported this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The technique may damage veins and lead to heart attacks. About 70% of bypass patients have veins removed this way instead of via “open harvesting.”
