Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Chile, no damage reported

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake shook Chile Friday near the city heavily damaged in a devastating February quake, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
Residents in Bio-Bio region were woken up by the tremor that lasted 25 seconds, Radio Cooperativa reported.
“There is no reported damage to infrastructure or injuries, but people were shaken up,” said a spokeswoman for the state National Emergency Office.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1 and struck at 6:03 a.m. (1003 GMT) 41 miles south of Concepcion. The quake was later downgraded to a 5.9.
The Feb. 27 magnitude 8.8 quake and ensuing tsunamis killed about 500 people and tore up roads and towns. It caused an estimated $30 billion in damage to infrastructure, homes and industry, the Chilean government said last month.
