MLB great Rickey Henderson reloads Phoenix home

Legendary baseball player Rickey Henderson has put his estate in Phoenix back on the market at $2.299 million.

Henderson had asked as much as $2.4 million for the home, which was previously owned by longtime Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg, earlier this year.

Backing South Mountain in the suburbs of Ahwatukee, the Mediterranean-style home is entered through a two-story foyer with a sweeping staircase. The two-story floor plan, with ornate columns and marble flooring, includes large formal spaces, a dual-island kitchen, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

Among features is a game room, a workout room and a steam room. The master suite, with walk-in closets and dual vanities, sports a private balcony and a sitting room with a fireplace.

Outdoors, landscaped grounds of about two acres center on a large pool and spa. Elsewhere on the property is a sunken basketball half-court, an outdoor fireplace and ramada with a barbecue/kitchen.

Henderson, 56, played 25 major league seasons for nine different teams, including the Athletics, Yankees and Dodgers. The Hall of Fame outfielder holds the all-time records for stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295).

Henderson purchased the home from Sandberg, who is currently the manager for the Philadelphia Phillies, in 1996 for $1.65 million, public records show. Sandberg paid $400,000 for the property in 1990.
