Cate Blanchett, Bolshoi Ballet heading to Lincoln Center Festival

Cate Blanchett is reaping awards by the armful for her performance in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” in which she plays a disgraced New York socialite who’s gone off the deep end. The Australian actress will trade in the Chanel suit for more working-class threads when she brings the Sydney Theatre Company’s recent production of Jean Genet’s “The Maids” to the Lincoln Center Festival in August.

Blanchett first appeared in the new production of “The Maids” in Sydney in June, co-starring alongside French star Isabelle Huppert. The two actresses played the homicidal sisters Claire and Solange, two domestic servants who enter into a strange folie à deux that results in the murder of their employer.

“The Maids,” which co-stars Elizabeth Debicki as their wealthy mistress, is scheduled to run at New York’s City Center Aug. 6-16.

The Sydney Theatre Company brought its production of “Uncle Vanya” to the Lincoln Center Festival in 2012. The company, headed by Andrew Upton, who is Blanchett’s husband, has toured internationally with a number of plays.

This year’s festival will also include appearances by the Bolshoi Ballet, in productions of “Swan Lake,” “Spartacus” and “Don Quixote” at the David H. Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center. The performances will run July 15-27.

The Bolshoi has been making international headlines following an acid attack last year on its artistic director, Sergei Filin. A dancer in the company, Pavel Dmitrichenko, was convicted in December of organizing the attack and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Filin, 43, has undergone more than 20 operations to repair his eyesight. He returned to the Bolshoi in September but still requires medical attention to fully restore his vision.

Other groups participating in this year’s festival include the Houston Grand Opera, with a production of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s “The Passenger”; and Heisei Nakamura-za, Japan’s leading Kabuki company, in a production of the new drama “Kaidan Chibusa No Enoki” (“The Ghost Tale of the Wet Nurse Tree”).
