Sony, Ubisoft to bring ‘Rabbids’ to the big screen

The large, crazed bunnies known as Rabbids -- spawned from the “Rayman” video game franchise and popularized in an animated TV series -- are headed to the big screen, Sony Pictures Entertainment and French game publisher Ubisoft announced Monday.
The two studios are partnering to develop a feature film based on the characters.
Jean-Julien Baronnet, executive director of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said in a statement that Sony “has tremendous experience developing hybrid live-action-and-animated blockbusters for audiences around the world, which makes them a natural fit for what we want to achieve with a Rabbids film.”
The Rabbids got their start as manic but lovable villains in Ubisoft’s “Rayman” series and eventually spun off into their own “Ravings Rabbids” games, as well as comic books, collectibles, merchandise and mobile games. They recently landed on Nickelodeon with the animated show “Rabbids Invasion.”
With their trajectory from the sidelines to the spotlight, the Rabbids recall the Minions of Universal’s “Despicable Me” films, who are set to get a film of their own next year.
No date has yet been announced for the “Rabbids” movie.
