Eminem teams with Spike Lee for moody, nostalgic ‘Headlights’ video

Eminem joined in the Mother’s Day festivities over the weekend with the release of a music video for his song “Headlights.”

The track, from last year’s “The Marshall Mathers LP 2,” chronicles the rapper’s troubled relationship with his mother, Debbie Mathers, about whom he’s written a number of other tunes.

But where he’d previously lambasted Mathers for what he perceived as her neglect, Eminem in “Headlights” seeks reconciliation; the song even enlists Nate Ruess of the band Fun. to deliver the touchy-feely vocal hook.

“Did I take it too far?” Eminem asks, “‘Cleaning Out My Closet’ and all them other songs? / But regardless I don’t hate you, ‘cause Ma / You’re still beautiful to me, ‘cause you’re my ma.”

On Sunday the rapper posted a music video for “Headlights,” one Spike Lee directed in Eminem’s hometown of Detroit. It follows a character assumed to be Debbie Mathers as she flips through a photo album filled with pictures of Eminem as a child then tries to make contact with her son. Last week Eminem announced that he’ll play London’s Wembley Stadium in July, a show described as the first time a hip-hop artist has headlined the venue.

He’s also scheduled to appear at Chicago’s Lollapalooza on Aug. 1 before kicking off a brief U.S. tour with Rihanna at the Rose Bowl. The two stars, who came together for “The Monster” from “MMLP2,” will hit the Pasadena stadium Aug. 7 and 8.
